many of the graves are eroding . The ground is lightly forested and covered in periwinkle .
The graves appear to extend from the Buckquarter entrance road southward towards the
top of a knoll . The modern Davis house is placed on the top of this knoll . This cemetery
does not appear to be noted in the Engstrom cemetery survey.
St. Mary 's Site 17 (31 Or498 * *)
This is the site of St . Mary ' s cemetery and of the associated 1759 chapel. This
site was previously surveyed by Works Progress Administration personnel ( 1937 , 1940)
and by volunteers with Jean Anderson (c . 1994) . It was revisited by an archaeologist in
1995 (Joy 1995 ) . The site is screened from the intersection of St . Mary' s Road and
Pleasant Green Road ( SR 1548 ) by large hardwood trees . It consists of an approximately
200 ft east/west by 250 ft north/south fieldstone wall (built 1836) surrounding about 45
marked graves . These markers are often fieldstone, although a few marble markers are
found. Dated gravestones range from 17804938 . A small stone foundation presumed to
be from the original ( 1759) chapel was briefly investigated by archaeologist Jane
Eastman (personal communication, 1999) . It is located within the stone walls of the
cemetery in the northeast corner.
The 1859 St. Mary' s Chapel stands on the hill north of the cemetery and 1759
chapel site . This building (see previous architectural site file section) was listed on the
National Register of Historic Places in 1978 , but does not have an official state , survey
site number (Henry 1999) .
St. Marys Site 10 (31Or489 * *)
At the intersection of St . Mary ' s Road and Pleasant Green Roads , in the
southwest corner, is an abandoned farmstead with a small Hall and Parlor frame structure
and various outbuildings . No artifacts were observed on the overgrown, pastured surface
of the farm. The farmstead was also visited and evaluated by the architectural historian
(architectural survey site #Or1455 ; Henry 1999) . This agrarian site ( St. Mary ' s Site 10 ,
31Or489 * * ) appears to date to around the turn- ofAhe- century. The farm complex is
clearly depicted on both the 1918 soil map and on the 1938 aerial photographs .
At the St. Mary ' s Chapel Homecoming service ( 8/29/99) members of the Walker
family were interviewed about this site . The site was the farm of William Walker, and
dates to before 1900 . William Walker farmed the land for a long time , as he lived to be .
105 years old . He and his family grew corn, wheat, and tobacco (son William Clyde
Walker and nephew Herman Walker, personal communications 1999) .
St. 1vIary 's Site 19 (31 Or498 * *)
The U . S . G . S . Northwest Durham topographic map shows that two structures were
once located along this road. A small farmstead is visible in this area on the 1938 aerial
photographs . This segment was field checked and proved to hold road remnants just north
of the present day road . The roadbed is not nearly as shrunken or gullied as that portion
seen at Ayr Mount , but it is an obvious old roadbed . The area is heavily forested and was
heavily posted against trespassers . It was not completely surveyed as a result .
38
