, t <br /> Certain landowners showed potential archaeological sites on or near their <br /> properties to the archaeologists . Some of those sites proved to already be marked on the <br /> archaeologists ' maps as potential sites based on historic research. Each of these sites <br /> received a brief pedestrian survey and surface inspection. There was not enough time to <br /> field inspect all of the potential sites discovered through documentary research or local <br /> informant interviews . All potential sites have been recorded on U . S . G. S . topographic <br /> maps of the project area. <br /> Places where the modern road curves north of the old trading path route were also <br /> checked for field traces of those roads. When a definite roadbed could be seen on the <br /> ground a site number was assigned to that road segment : <br /> Archaeological sites that were visited in the field were given permanent North <br /> Carolina Office of State Archaeology site numbers. These are given in Table 2 below: <br /> Table 2 .
