J
HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
June 9, 1999
Dear St. Mary' s Road Property Owner:
St. Mary ' s Road (NCSR 1002) in Orange County includes much of what was known as the Indian
Trading Path . This route extended from present- day Petersburg, Virginia, to the North Carolina- South
Carolina border and beyond. During colonial times , it was a major route of travel into Orange County .
A number of historic sites are located along St. Mary ' s Road. The corridor is also believed to be an
important resource for archeological study. '
The Orange County Historic Preservation Commission (HPQ is conducting a study on the history of the St.
Mary ' s Road corridor. The County has contracted with an architectural historian and an archeologist to
evaluate the status of historic resources along the Indian Trading Path . The researchers are interested in
tracing, to the extent possible, the original route of the Trading Path, much of which has been obliterated in
the course of modern development.
Dr. Linda F . Stine, the Principal Archeologist for this study, would like to meet with property owners who
may have information about the Trading Path and its history. If you have any Native American artifacts,
such as arrowheads, or knowledge about historical places along the corridor, you are invited to attend a
Community Open House on Wednesday, June 23 , 1999 from 7 : 00 PM to 9 : 00 PM in the conference
room of the Planning and Agriculture Center, 306 Revere Road in Hillsborough . This is intended to be
an informal gathering and all interested persons are invited to attend.
For more information, please call Donald Belk, Preservation Planner, Orange County Environment and
Resource Conservation Department, at 7324181 , extension 2594 .
Sincerely,
r
Tom Allison, Chairman
Orange County Historic Preservation Commission
t•
