BW&A
B . WILLIAMS & ASSOCIATES
Book Design 6j Production Ioo9 West Main Street, Durham, North Carolina 2770I (PIP) 956 91II
June 15 , 1999
Donald R. Belk, AICP
Preservation Planner
Orange County Environment and Resource Conservation Department
3o6 Revere Road
Hillsborough, NC 27278
Dear Don,
It was a pleasure to meet with you last week; I was especially delighted to learn of your kinship to one of my
favorite people, Doris Belk Tilley. She's a remarkable person, and someone I always hope to ."live up to ,
Regarding safe storage for photographs and artifacts gathered for the Architectural History of Orange County, I
have checked with the office manager at Tseng Information Systems (my husband's " firm) . She says it would be
fine for us to use their bank vaults for safe-keeping of art and records . We didn't actually measure things out,
but I would venture that four to six medium to large boxes could be stored there without crowding their space .
There would be no charge for use of this space, so that seems to be a good option for us if the Hillsborough
ide storage for you .
Library cannot prov
Also , I'm enclosing a copy of Dan Pezzoni's memo , detailing the financial history of some recent county archi-
tectural histories . (At the time it was prepared, I dont believe that Onslow County had done much promotion
for their book. Also , the Wayne County figures probably do not include the research costs for the initial inven-
tory. )
Still, I hope this review might be helpful; if you'd like any additional information, please just let us know. Dans
phone number, in case you'd like to speak with him directly, is 540464- 5315 .
And thank you for the disk file of Dr. Mattson s manuscript for the text and Notes . (Just to make note of this ,
we dorit yet have the disk file for the Archaeology section by Samford and Davis , correct?)
We do have a few questions about the text, but there is plenty of time to work these out. If Dr.
Mattson plans on preparing a table of contents , that would probably answer my structural questions . Also , a
draft of the title page and copyright page is something we'll need by the time we start production.
Regarding structure, I gather that the heading on page 1 "Early Settlement to the Civil War" is a Part
title, with the heading on page 24 "Architectural Development Early Settlement to the Civil War" being a
chapter within the Part? ? This same structure is repeated on pages 37 and 49 regarding the post-war periods.
Lastly, while the manuscript seems very well-written, I did spot some small inconsistencies during a quick pass .
I wonder if we might not want someone else—perhaps on your Board, or perhaps a copyeditor—to give a
quick review? This could actually wait until we are proofreading the first typeset proof, but it costs money to
make changes then , whereas it would be "free" now. The matters I noticed are, page 19 , use of both Mason
Hall and Mason hall. In the Endnotes, note 2 , Jean Bradly Anderson, while note 15 uses Jean Bradley
Anderson.
Fax number 019) 956 9112
