This year tribal representatives conducted a blessing ceremony and
took part in a public welcoming ceremony prior to the start of the field school . In addition ,
three staff members from the tribe ' s Cultural Resources Division each spent a week on the
crew . Activities this year included further excavation of a Pisgah phase (ca . A . D . 1400)
house , as well as excavation into the late Archaic (ca . 1500 B . C . ) occupation zone .
Trail of Tears
David Moore is also working closely with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and the
North Carolina Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association . This state-organized group is
working to document the historic sites associated with the Trail of Tears so that they can be
included on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail . This project became necessary when
the National Park Service established the National Historic Trail without including any sites
or portions of the trail within the state of North Carolina,
The Trail of Tears project will document more than 120 sites in six western North Carolina
counties , including the removal forts , the home sites of individual families who were forcibly
removed, and extant portions of the original- trails and roads used by the U . S . Army to march
the Cherokee people away from their mountain homelands .. A highway marker program and
guidebook will be developed to interpret the cultural landscape of the Removal Era Cherokee
communities in North Carolina. - David G.
