F
x Page 45
STATE GRANTS
The 1997 General Assembly appropriated eight million dollars to the North Carolina
Department of Cultural Resources (DCR) for grants to cultural , historic, art , and museum
projects . The appropriation was divided among historic preservation , documentation , and
arts-related projects . Funding was made available to local governments and nonprofit
organizations on a competitive application basis . Unlike the $ 100 , 000 maximum of the 1993 -
1995 cycles , there was no cap on the 1997 grant awards . However, DCR Secretary Betty Ray
McCain made every effort to ensure maximum participation in the program . Among the
preservation projects were : $ 60 , 000 to Preservation North Carolina for the rehabilitation of a
model house in the Glencoe Mill Village in Alamance County; $2 , 000 to prepare a National
Register nomination for the Cape Lookout Village Historic District in Carteret County;
$ 10 , 000 to restore the Thomas Day House/Union Tavern in Caswell County ; $ 5 , 000 to
prepare a National Register nomination for the NCFS Fire Tower in Warren County ; and
$ 125 , 000 to restore the Oval Ballroom in Fayetteville in Cumberland County .
