' Page 37 <br /> STATE GRANT PROJECTS <br /> The North Carolina General Assembly appropriated $ 8 million to the North Carolina <br /> Department of Cultural Resources during the 1997 session to be used for local art and history <br /> grants . A number of the grant projects included " bricks and mortar" restoration work on <br /> historic buildings throughout the state . <br /> At Hope Plantation, near Windsor in Bertie County, major structural work has been <br /> undertaken on both the front and rear porches , and the window sash and trim have been <br /> restored . The exterior of the house has been completely repainted. Architectural conservator <br /> George Fore conducted interior finishes analysis and published his results . The home of Gov . <br /> David Stone , Hope Plantation was completed in 1803 and is one of the premier private <br /> restoration projects in northeastern North Carolina , <br /> The Walter Reed House in Murfreesboro , Hertford County, received grant funds for interior <br /> restoration work, which included plaster repairs , replacement of moldings , and the restoration <br /> of decorative painting. Grant funds also assisted the. reconstruction of the kitchen building at <br /> the John Wheeler House in Murfreesboro . <br /> The antebellum Bellamy Mansion in Wilmington, New Hanover County, received grant <br /> funds to assist in archaeological and documentary research that will aid in the reconstruction <br /> of the 1860 carriage house . The building will be adapted to provide visitor orientation , <br /> classroom space , and rest rooms , as well as archival and collections space . An academic <br /> restoration is planned for the Oval Ballroom in Fayetteville , including relocation of the <br /> structure on its present site , reconstruction of the missing fireplace and chimney, plaster and <br /> molding repair, and new mechanical systems . Grant funds assisted the local chapter of the <br /> Colonial Dames in America in the completion of documentary research, as well as interior <br /> and exterior paint analysis . The ballroom was constructed ca. 1818 as an addition to the <br /> Halliday-Williams House , which was destroyed in the 1950s . The Women ' s Club of <br /> Fayetteville rescued the ballroom and moved it to its present site . <br /> Interior restoration of the Jacob Holt House in Warrenton ; Warren County , has been <br /> completed as a result of two state grants . Holt was a master builder in the region and <br /> constructed his home in the 1850s . The Historic Hillsborough Commission installed a new <br /> standing-seam metal roof on the Burwell School in Hillsborough, Orange County , using <br /> grant funds . Architectural plans are being developed to convert the former sanctuary of the <br /> historic St. Joseph' s Church in Durham for use as a performing arts space . <br /> Built ca. 1818 , Pleasant Retreat Academy in Lincolnton, Lincoln County, is undergoing <br /> extensive interior restoration with the help of a state grant . The academy, also known as the <br /> Confederate Memorial Hall , was the recipient in 1908 of the first state historic preservation <br /> grant4n-aid, which went to the United Daughters of the Confederacy which still occupies the <br /> building .
