Page 32
Hammocks Beach State Park
Analyses are nearly complete on materials recovered during excavations at the new
Hammocks Beach State Park interpretative center site . The investigations were conducted by
East Carolina University, under the direction of Randy Daniel . Site 31ON665 is part of a
complex of extensive Woodland-period shell middens on the central coast and has yielded
large numbers of cultural features and artifacts . Although the primary occupation of the site
appears to date to between A .D . 900 and A .D . 1400 , earlier occupations were also discovered .
The artifacts and knowledge about the site ' s Native American inhabitants found by Dr .
Daniel and his ECU crew will be incorporated into interpretive center displays and activities
at Hammocks Beach State Park .
Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune
As part of an ongoing inventory of archaeological resources , Camp Lejeune has employed
several private contractors to conduct surveys , tests , and data-recovery projects at sites
threatened by base operations . Nearly three hundred archaeological sites have been identified
on the base thus far , several of which are considered eligible for the National Register . The
base contains a wide range of resource types , from small encampments dating to the Archaic
period (ca. 7000 B . C . -2000 B . C .) to large villages occupied during the Late Woodland period, .,
prior to European settlement .
Marine Corps Base Bogue Auxiliary Landing Field
Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point , Bogue Field, has been subject to several years of
archaeological investigations . As a consequence , it is now known that virtually the entire base
was once covered by precontact Native American archaeological remains , most of which ,
particularly near the shores of Bogue Sound, are undisturbed , . Discussions among U . S .
Marine Corps , Cherry Point ; U . S . Navy; and OSA staff are leading to the definition of a
twenty-acre area that will be protected as a coastal " archaeological preserve " at Bogue Field . --
Mark A . Mathis
SOUTHERN PIEDMONT
Fort Bragg
Major archaeological investigations have been conducted at several locations in the southern
Piedmont over the past year . Investigations have included large-scale surveys of newly
acquired lands at Fort Bragg in Cumberland and Hoke Counties , including the Overhills tract
formerly owned by the Rockefeller family , and data recovery excavations at Fort Bragg sites .
More than six hundred new archaeological sites were found on the Overhills tract . They are
being added to the statewide archaeological inventory .
