Members of the committee were David <br /> Brook , deputy state historic preservation officer , chair , Stephen R . Claggett , state <br /> archaeologist , HPO , Michael Hill , research historian , Research Branch, DAH ; Richard <br /> Knapp , research curator , Historic Sites Section ; and Michael Southern , research historian , <br /> HPO . <br /> The North Carolina battlefield listing was part of a national inventory coordinated by the <br /> National Park Service ' s American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) , acting under a 1996 <br /> congressional directive .
