LO Page 14
NEW LOCAL PRESERVATION COMMISSIONS AND DESIGNATIONS
Six municipalities adopted preservation ordinances establishing preservation commissions
during the past year : Kings Mountain in the western region; Liberty and Milton in the
Piedmont ; and Warsaw, Weldon, and Woodland in the east . One hundred and twenty-six
municipalities and counties in North Carolina now have preservation commissions .
r
14
The 19974998 period saw the local designation of eight historic districts , the largest number
in recent years . The increase brings the total number of locally designated districts throughout
the state to eighty-four. The eight include the Broad-Kenan Historic District in Wilson , the
Brookwood Historic District in Gastonia, the Ellis Street Graded School Historic District in
Salisbury, the Haymount Historic District in Fayetteville , the Hyman Heights Historic
District in Hendersonville , the Rosemount-McIver Park Historic District in Sanford , and the
Milton and Weldon Historic Districts .
The number of landmark (individu I property) designations increased by forty-four ,
consistent with the annual average in recent years . This brings the total number of locally
t ' designated landmarks to nearly 850 .
The new commissions and designation activities point to the growing strength of local
preservation programs . The result of untiring efforts on the part of local preservationists , the
local commissions and their work reflect the vision and commitment of city councils and
county boards that are willing to act to preserve local heritage for the enjoyment and benefit
41
of the entire community . -Melinda Coleman
Map 2 .
