Nelms, Barbara L. Brooks
ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORIC PRESERVATION ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB
IF
World Wide Web sites maintained by the HPO and the OSA continue to receive steady
visitation . The North Carolina archaeology site has received almost 28 , 000 visitors since its
inception in early 1996 and continues at a rate of about 1 , 300 per month . The total number of
visits to the HPO site since it was first posted in October 1996 now exceeds 10 , 000 and
currently more than 600 a month . The site addresses are :
State Historic Preservation Office : http : / /www . hpo . dcr . state . ncous
North Carolina Archaeology: http : / /www . archadcrestateencous
Both sites offer standard information about HPO and OSA programs , as well as news and
current information of special interest . New additions to the HPO Web site in the past year
have included a roster of preservation commission staff throughout the state , a roster of
National Register consultants , and information about the new state tax credits for non-
income-producing historic properties . A complete list of National Register listings in North
Carolina is updated every six months , and other items such as the list of survey publications
are updated periodically .
The North Carolina archaeology Web site is a joint effort of the OSA , the North Carolina
Archaeological Society , and the North Carolina Archaeological Council . The site offers a
wide range of articles about the historic and precontact archaeology of North Carolina,
including summaries of individual sites and research projects . Lists of professional
archaeologists and archaeological consultants are updated regularly . In addition, the site
provides more than four hundred " links " to other archaeology-related pages .
In other computer developments , the HPO and OSA are moving closer to networking
computers within each of the branches . Networking will enable file and device sharing
among staff, which should help make some operations more efficient . The chief improvement
will be that most HPO and OSA staff will have Internet access and e-mail addresses , which are
now limited .
i
