TO : Alumni of White Oak Grove School
and Other Interested Persons
RE: Restoration of White Oak Grove School
Cedar Grove,- NC
MEETING ON SATURDAY, MAY 1 , 1999 AT 4 : 00 PM
At White Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church
Carr Store Road, Cedar Grove, NC
In the late 20s about 50 African-American families in Northern Orange County came together for a
common cause : to educate their children in the most affordable , nurturing environment possible .
ity resources and talents , the White Oak Grove School became a realiFy and for By pooling commun
twenty years operated until all area black community schools were consolidated under the new
Cedar Grove School , located on Highway 86 . Because of the efforts of the Orange County
Historical Preservation Commission , funding has been appropriated to write a grant to place the
White Oak Grove School on the National Register, the federal listing of historical and cultural places
in our nation . Restoring the White Oak Grove School would be a fitting tribute to those unsung
heroes of Northern Orange County- rural fathers and mothers in the early part of twentieth century-
who recognized the value of a good education . Because of their gifts and sacrifices , generations after
them have gone on to become teachers, preachers , lawyers, doctors , professors, engineers, and
more .
While interested persons of the Northern Orange Community are doing everything Possible to make
application for the National Register, they have also been asked by the Historical Preservation
Commission to protect the White Oak Grove School from further deterioration and water damage .
They have met with a restoration contractor who can , for a nominal fee, secure the existing, decaying
structure . This would only be an interim step until National Register and non-profit status can be
secured . These steps will help obtain the necessary funding to complete the renovation of the
interior and exterior of the school .
Can you imagine a multipurpose site in rural Northern Orange County that would have activities
such as a speaker' s bureau , a tutoring center, a meeting place, and library activities for the young and
oid - lust to name a few ? Let' s take the educational cause that was admirably begun at the beginning
of the 20" century into the new millennium!
For more details , call 91 M63- 1896 or 919= 563 -6286 .
