BW&A
3 . WILLIAMS & ASSOCIATES
Book Design er Production zoop West Main Street, Durham, North Carolina 27yoz (prp) 956 piii
March 31, 1999
Donald R. Belk, AICP
Preservation Planner
Orange County Environment and Resource Conservation Department
3o6 Revere Road
Hillsborough, NC 27278
Dear Mr. Belk,
Thank you for including Be Williams & Associates in your Request for Proposal process for publication of the
Architectural History of Orange County. We take great pride in, and pleasure from, our work on architectural histo-
ries, and hope we will be able to work with you and the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission .
We are enclosing, along with our Proposal, a description of our studio as well as a list of references from other
North Carolina county historical commissions . Starting with The History eT'Architecture of Lee County in 1995 , we
have produced five North Carolina architectural histories; we are currently at work on the architectural history of
Charlottesville and Albemarle County, Virginia for. the University Press of Virginia. We hope you will check any of
our references and peruse the sample books we're leaving for your review. (We will need to retrieve these samples .
when you're done with them .)
A few notes .of explanation about our Proposal: We understand that Dr. Mattsons manuscript is complete, as is the
Archaeology section by Samford and Davis . We further understand , that the Historic Preservation Commission will
be conducting a search for and selection of up to 16 pages of additional materials solicited from citizens of Orange
County.
Based on the. length of the manuscript and the number of photographs, we have projected the overall
book length as 128 pages (including an ample allowance for photographs) . This , in turn, is the basis of our forecast
of the amount of time needed to design, typeset, proofread, and supervise the print / bind process for your book. If
any given area takes less time than we've projected, we'd of course only bill for time actually spent. Conversely, if
the book turns out to be longer, or other unforeseen circumstances cause costs to run, higher than expected, then
we would return to the Commission for guidance in dealing with a potential budget overrun . (We might suggest,
if we needed to economize later.) We think you'll find upon
for example, a change in manufacturing specifications
checking our references that we have a track record of bringing in books at or below budget.
Given the relatively short book we forecast, and depending on the quality of photographs available, we might sug-
gest that you consider printing the book in a duotone process . [The duotone process is a printing method used to
extend the range of tones for photographic reproduction, it involves two impressions on the printing press (usually
black and a second color) to give added richness to the shadows and more deleicate detail in the highlights . As an
illustration, were including a sample book published by UNC Press with duotone photos .]
For the purposes of the RFP, however, we have obtained a bid from a reputable printer in Michigan
(which has printed most of our prior architectural histories) with one-color halftones for the photos . Were we to
actually produce your book, we would conduct a competitive bid process once all specifications were final; this
would extend to at least three printing firms .
Fax number (9zo 9S6-yzr2
