" Several salient lessons
have been learned during the while — one of them being that heritage tourism must be community driven .
Indeed , without the enthusiasm and support of the very folks to whom the traditions and legacies belong,
success will not likely be coming to whatever heritage tourism project hoped for. Another lesson is that
heritage tourism best works when partnerships are involved . This statement may seem highly simplistic
statement at first, but — remembering that heritage combines history, culture and nature — its complexity
often requires persons from different backgrounds to work together.
Dan Kidd
Heritage Tourism Manager
Division of Tourism , Film and Sports Development
NC Department of Commerce
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------
NORTH CAROLINA HERITAGE TRAILS IN SOUTHERN LIVING
The February 1999 issue of Southern Living features a special 20- page travel insert entitled " On the
Trail of Carolina ' s Best. Along with Hertford as the eastern participant , Bryson City will
serve as a prototype for heritage tourism development across the Tar Heel State. Whereas Hertford ' s
major strength lies in its history (virtually the entire town has been listed in the National Register of
Historic Places) , Bryson City is widely noted for its magnificent natural surroundings . Hertford ' s scenic
location on the Perquimans River is significant too , and both communities boast cultural heritage as
well . Nearby Bryson City are utmost elements of Native American culture : the Cherokee Indian
Reservation , the Museum of the Cherokee, the Oconalluftee Indian Village , and " Unto These Hills "
Outdoor Drama (to celebrate its golden anniversary this summer) . In Perquimans County, the cultural
legacy of the Quakers lives on . Bryson City and Hertford greatly complement each other, and they
embody much of the best of North Carolina .
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT WITH HERTFORD AND BRYSON CITY ?
i
Through the dedicated work of a special committee, Hertford has drafted a plan entitled , " Hertford and
Perquimans County : A Vision for Heritage Tourism . " Following review and comment, this document
Division of Tourism will be presented to representatives from certain Federal agencies having funding mechanisms . Bryson
City has initiated a similar report.
