Betsy Gohdes-Baten 2737 Circle Drive, Durham, NC 27705
(919) 489= 6368
Mr. Donald Belk
Orange County Planning Department
206F Revere Rd.
Hillsborough, NC 27278
February 9, 1999
Dear
I will c nduct a survey of the St . Mary's Road Corridor from US 70 to the Durham
County Boundary under the terms discussed in your letter: I will update the 1992 -93
survey as necessary, prepare survey files according to NCSHPO standards for
properties that now fall within the 50-year age guideline or that may have been excluded
from the earlier survey, evaluate the potential for a National Register District within the
corridor, prepare a study list application for the district if appropriate, and attend the
three meetings you specify .
I understand the project' s cost is not .to exceed $3,500 . I believe I can do the above-
specified work for $3, 400 including photography expenses . If I am the successful
bidder, I will require $ 750 after signing the contract to do the work and $2, 650 on
completion of the project to your satisfaction. I can begin work on April 15, 1999, and
will complete all work by or before June 30, 1999 .
I know the St . Marys Road Corridor well. Having been raised in Durham County, I have
traveled it frequently over many years going to and from Hillsborough. Within the last
six years, I have also prepared National Register Nominations . for Maple Hill or the
Jacob Jackson Farm, the Holden-Roberts Farm now called Rolling Acres (nomination
withdrawn by owner), and a study list application for Sunnyside, Captain John Berry' s
summer home, all properties located along the St. Marys Road Corridor in Orange
County . In addition I am familiar with the history of milling along the Eno River in the
area. I am submitting my resume and a copy . of Section 8 of the Holden-Roberts Farm
National Register Nomination as a sample of my work for your consideration. I look
forward to the possibility of working with you on this project . If you have any
questions, please call me at the above number.
Sincerely,
Betsy Gohdes-Baten
