Belk, AICP <br /> Preservation Planner <br /> Orange County Historic Preservation Commission <br /> 306 -F Revere Road <br /> Hillsborough , NC 27278 <br /> Dear > 1 <br /> Thank you for the report on Orange County ' s activities as a Certified Local Government (CLG) <br /> in North Carolina. ' s preservation program during FY98 (ending June 30 ) . The CLG program is a <br /> national initiative to preserve the unique and valuable historic character of hundreds of <br /> communities across the Corintry . It provides for increasing local ' involvement in preservation and <br /> yoffers technical assistance And grants to participating local governments such as Orange County . <br /> Staff members of the State JAistoric Preservation Office have reviewed the information in the <br /> report and find. that Orange County is fulfilling the four basic responsibilities for continued i <br /> participation in the CLG program : <br /> 1 . Enforcing state and local legislation for the designation and protection of historic resources <br /> 2 . Maintaining a system for survey and inventory of historic properties <br /> 3 . Providing for adequate public participation in the historic preservation program <br /> Ar . Reviewing National Register nominations through a qualified local historic preservation <br /> commission <br /> We congratulate the County upon the local designation of four landmarks : Bingham School, <br /> Chatwood, Moorefields, and Rigsbee ' s Rock House . These properties are listed in the National <br /> Register of Historic Places and are most worthy of the recognition and protection of local <br /> landmark designation . We commend the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission for <br /> developing the local landmakc designation program . We hope its adoption by the Board of County <br /> Commissioners last year- fill. open the way to the more designations . We also commend the <br /> Commission for its stro�nw support of the successful nomination of the Cedar Grove Rural <br /> Crossroads Historic Usetrict to the rational Register, culminating years of commitment and <br /> efforts to build support for recognizing this valuable rural historic resource .
