Local Commissions <br /> December 18 , 1998 <br /> Page 2 <br /> centered way of life in villages , towns , and cities could preserve farmland and open space and <br /> protect the environment . Each commission delegation will be given the book to take home . <br /> Jo Leimenstoll , AIA , associate professor at UNC - Greensboro and nationally recognized <br /> expert on design guidelines , will lead a team presentation on the process developed by the <br /> National Trust Community Partners Program to create affordable housing design guidelines <br /> and how it was used in the South Greensboro Historic District . <br /> The rich architectural heritage of Hickory and Catawba County and the beautiful western <br /> Piedmont landscape will be a wonderful setting for the conference . We will meet in historic <br /> First Presbyterian Church and Old City Hall . The Hickory Landmarks Society will host dinner <br /> at Maple Grove , a wonderful ca . 1875 Italianate- style farmhouse . The owners of the Judge <br /> Councill House have invited our group to tour this grand Queen Anne- style house being <br /> renovated as a bed- and-breakfast inn . On Saturday afternoon, the Catawba County Historical <br /> Association will host a guided bus tour of some of Catawba County ' s National Register <br /> properties , including Bunker Hill Covered Bridge ( ca . 1895 ) and Old St . Paul ' s Church and <br /> Cemetery ( ca . 1818) , which features a log church with vernacular exterior and Federal- style <br /> interior . <br /> The registration brochures will be mailed out in January .
