eir
"R` A 01
HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
October 28 , 1998
Margaret Brown , Chair
Orange County Board of Commissioners
Post Office Box 8181
Hillsborough , NC 27278
Re : Paving of SR 1337 ( Bane Road ) ; Impact on Maude Faucette House (The Elms)
Dear Ms . Brown :
At our September 23 , 1998 meeting , the Historic Preservation Commission was made aware of plans to
pave SR 1337 ( Bane Road ) in Cheeks Township , Orange County .
The owners of the property attended our meeting and expressed their concerns regarding the plans to
pave this road . The Maude Faucette House is listed on Orange County ' s historic architectural resource
inventory . It is also included on the state ' s study list of properties considered eligible for the National
Register of Historic Places .
We share the owners ' concerns about plans to pave Bane Road , which bisects the property . The Maude
Faucette House ( also known as " The Elms " ) is one of the oldest surviving private residences in Orange
County . It is an outstanding and an intact example of early 19th century , Federal Style architecture .
Because of its architectural integrity and its relatively unspoiled setting along the Eno River, the Maude ;
Faucette House is one our top priorities for designation as an Orange County Historic Landmark .
We hope that discussions between the property owner, the NCDOT , and the State Historic Preservation
Office will result in satisfactory measures to reduce adverse impacts to this site .
We feel that a statement from the Board of Commissioners , supporting our concerns in this matter, would
help to ensure a constructive dialogue between the parties concerned .
Sincerely , j
I
Tom Allison
Chair
/db
cc : Donald R . Belk , Preservation Planner
