10 November 1998
Mr . Don Belk, Preservation Officer
Orange County Historic Preservation Committee
PO Box 8181
Hillsborough, NC 27278
Dear Mr. Belk :
It was a pleasure talking with you this morning . You have given me much needed information . Once again
I find myself pondering my very good fortune . My grandparents worked very hard to acquire this property
I now occupy. I intend to do all I can to preserve that which I am steward of. The first step was obtaining
the historical recognition I knew it warrented. On August 6, 1998 the Dr. Arch Jordan House joined the
ranks of other notable historical sites in the country - its placement in the National Historic Registry by the
Department of the Interior. Principally, I have Dr. Keith Zahniser to thank for his diligent attempts at
getting all of the necessary information together and then writing a narrative form that was both technically
accurate and aesthetically pleasing . Unfortunately he is not in the country to hear the good news . One
day I hope to thank him personally . I also would like to thank you and other Historic Preservation
Committee members for all of your assistance in his research . He commented several times on your
willingness to help and genuine interest in preserving the Dr . Arch Jordan House, which I am lucky enough
to call home . Thank you greatly !
During review of Dr. Zahniser ' s final report, he noted that I contact your office to request placement on
Orange County ' s list of locally historic landmarks . I am most interested in the Orange County Local
Landmarks Program and would like to be considered for inclusion therein. If any information is needed
about the house that is not in your file please contact me . I am employed by Duke University, within the
School of the Environment. My daytime telephone number is (919) 6134041 . My evening number is
(919) 6444685 . If we meet the timeline you mentioned this morning perhaps the Dr. Jordan House will
receive another notable distinction by early spring — listing as one of Orange County ' s Historic
Landmarks .
i
Once again thanks to you and other committee members for assisting me in the preservation of my special
home . I will certainly keep you abreast of any structural changes that may be made in the future .
Hopefully, renovation and rehabilitation are in the not too distant future . Mr . John Williams serves as my
design consultant. I am sure you are familiar with his work. He loves the house and shares in my
excitement ! Your suggestions and comments will always be welcome, too . When John and I have
progressed a bit further, I will contact you and perhaps then discuss the particulars .
I look forward to the day when I can invite you to visit an authentically restored late 19t' century Italianate
home that speaks of another time .
Respectfully submitted,
"eo,04 wow
Elizabeth (Betty) P .
