A <br /> • • • <br /> Certified Local Governments yt, <br /> Local governments participate directly in the national historic preservation program when the State <br /> Historic Preservation Officer certifies that the local government has established its own historic preser- <br /> vation commission and program meeting Federal and State standards . A local government that receives <br /> such certification is known as a " Certified Local Government" or CLG. A major incentive of the CLG <br /> program is the pool of grant funds SHPOs are required to set aside to fiord local historic preservation <br /> projects (the funds must be at least 100/9 of the StaWs annual allocation of Historic Preservation Fund <br /> monies) . CLGs are the only eligible applicants for these funds . Projects eligible for funding and the <br /> criteria used to select them are developed annually by the SHPO . Among the kinds of activities that <br /> have received funding are the following : architectural, historical, and archeological surveys ; oral histo- <br /> ries ; nominations to the National Register, staff work for historic preservation commissions; design <br /> guidelines and preservation plans ; public outreach materials such as publications, videos, exhibits, and <br /> brochures ; training for commission members and staff, and rehabilitation or restoration of National <br /> Register-listed properties .
