• • MEMO* • - <br /> Historic Preservation Fund Five - Year Highlights <br /> ( FY 1993 - 1997 ) <br /> • The annual HPF award to States increased from $28 , 986, 000 in FY 1993 to $29 , 394, 000 in FY <br /> 1997 . However, when adjusted for inflation, the FY 1997 award was a 12 . 3 % decrease from the <br /> FY 1993 award_ <br /> • States spent an average of 88 . 8 % of their funds annually on historic preservation activities and <br /> 11 . 2 % on program administration . <br /> • Since FY 1993 , more than 13 million acres have been surveyed each year and at least 1317000 <br /> properties added to State inventories annually . <br /> • Since FY 1993 , more than 1 , 300 nominations have been submitted by States each year to the Na- <br /> tional Register of Historic Places . These nominations have added on average 34 , 000 contributing <br /> resources to the National Register each year. <br /> • Since FY 1993 , more than 58 local governments have been newly certified in each of the five years <br /> covered by the report. The total number of Certified Local Governments has increased from 843 in <br /> FY 1993 to 1 , 109 in FY 1997 . Iowa (97 CLGs), Utah (72 CLGs) , and Georgia (52 CLGs) have <br /> certified the greatest number of local governments since the beginning of the program . <br /> • .More than 88 , 000 Federal projects were reviewed and at least 52, 000 National Register eligibility <br /> opinions were provided to Federal agencies (under the provisions of Section 106 of the National <br /> Historic Preservation Act) in each of the five years covered by this report. <br /> • Since FY 1993 , the largest source (71 %) of nonfederal matching share has consistently been State <br /> governments . State governments provide seven times more funds than the next highest donor of <br /> nonfederal matching share . <br /> • The most prevalent type of project receiving Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives involved <br /> housin -g between 40% and 53 % . Low/ Moderate Income Units comprised between 47% and 83 % <br /> of housing newly created through the rehabilitation of historic buildings . <br /> • NP &approved State Historic Preservation Plans are being used by 55 States and Territories . <br /> • Since FY 1993 , tribes have submitted 916 proposals requesting nearly $39 . 8 million for historic <br /> preservation projects .
