In May 1998, the Historic Preservation Commission received a $5, 000 grant <br /> from the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources for publication of the manuscript. This is an <br /> outright grant, and no County match is required. <br /> Phase V, preparation of a nomination for the Cedar Grove Rural Crossroads Historic District to the National <br /> Register of Historic Places, represents the first step in the process of designating local landmarks and <br /> districts, including National Register nominations for eligible sites . The recently- adopted Landmarks <br /> Designation Program symbolizes the "coming of ages' of the County ' s historic preservation program . The <br /> Historic Preservation Commission will request continuation of the annual $ 10 , 000 appropriation for <br /> landmark designation studies during FY199 &99 . The HPC will continue to utilize CLG grants to <br /> implement the goals and objectives of the Historic Preservation Element, For the CLG grant cycle <br /> corresponding with the 1998-99 fiscal year, the HPC will utilize County match ' funds ($6000) on t <br /> prepare a Preservation Planning Study for the St: Mary 's Road/Trading Path Historic Corridor. <br /> RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS <br /> The landmarks designation program, development of design guidelines, and coordination of the manuscript <br /> publication and St. Mary ' s Road/Trading Path Historic Corridor Preservation Planning Study will require <br /> the following commitment of existing staff resources : <br /> Planning Director Planner II/Landscape Architect <br /> Administrative Assistant II Planner II/Preservation <br /> Manuscript publication costs are estimated to be $ 15 , 625 for 1 , 500 hardcover copies . The $5, 000 grant <br /> from the NC Department of Cultural Resources will be combined with a $5, 000 loan from the NC <br /> Federation of Historical Societies, along with private donations. Recoup of costs for loan repayment <br /> would be achieved through publication sales. <br /> Annual funding for landmark designation studies was begun in FY1997-98 . The $ 10, 000 appropriation was <br /> used to help property owners defray the expense of preparing designation applications . Design guidelines <br /> tailored to the architectural styles and landscapes of Orange County will be developed by staff and the <br /> Historic Preservation Commission. <br /> Preparation of a Preservation Planning Study for St. Mary 's Roa& Trading Path Historic Corridor is <br /> estimated at $12, 000. To fund the project, County matching funds of $6, 000 would be combined with <br /> staff in-kind contributions totalling $2, 000, and a $4, 000 grant from the Certified Local Government <br /> Program. <br /> Staff will compile data from time sheets concerning staff hours expended and costs associated with the <br /> project for submission to the State Historic Preservation Office . Reports will be distributed to the County <br /> Manager, Historic Preservation Commission, and Board of Commissioners outlining this information . <br />
