a i <br /> S <br /> ORANGE COUNTY HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION <br /> CLG YEAR-END REPORT <br /> HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PERIOD JULY 1 , 1997- JUKE 309 1998 <br /> period , the Orange County HPC began a program to locally <br /> During this annual reporting <br /> designate its most significant historic sites . Planning Department staff completed a report <br /> for the Board of Commissioners entitled Preserving the Orange Tradition : A Landmark <br /> Designation Program for Orange Coup., which detailed the procedures , costs , and <br /> benefits of instituting a designation program . The Board adopted the local landmark <br /> designation program in October . The HPC recommended four sites that are currently <br /> listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the first group of Orange County <br /> Historic Landmarks . Following a public hearing, the Board of Commissioners officially <br /> adopted designation ordinances on June 22 , 1998 . <br /> Another significant event for the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission <br /> * 123 , 1998 when the Cedar Grove Rural Crossroads Historic District was <br /> occurred on Ap <br /> officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places . This marked the culmination <br /> of four years of work by staff and the HPC . The National Register nomination enjoyed <br /> widespread support in the Cedar Grove community and was enthusiastically endorsed at a <br /> public hearing by residents and the local church congregations . The nomination was <br /> prepared by Kaye Graybeal , Historic Resource Specialist with DS Atlantic in Winston- <br /> Salem, NC . <br /> In March, the Commission held a public hearing for a National Register nomination on <br /> the Dr. Arch Jordan House, considered the best-preserved and most stylish example of <br /> the Italianate architectural style in rural Orange County . The nomination was presented <br /> to the North Carolina National Register Advisory Committee on April 9 , 1998 . <br /> Also in March, Orange County was awarded a $ 5 , 000 gift from the NC Department of <br /> Cultural Resources . These funds will be used in the publication of Orange County ' s <br /> architectural historical manuscript. <br /> In April 1998 , the Orange County HPC was awarded a $ 4 , 000 grant from the Certified <br /> Local Government program. These funds will be matched by $ 8 , 000 in County funds <br /> and in-kind contributions to conduct a preservation planning study of the St . Mary ' s Road <br /> Corridor. This scenic road parallels a Trading Path which extended from Petersburg, VA <br /> to the NC/SC border and was a major route for travel and trade during colonial times . <br /> ill involve an intensive evaluation of the area and assess several preservation <br /> The study w <br /> options , including National Register and local landmark designation, scenic byway <br /> designation, and farmland preservation. <br /> At the next statewide preservation commission conference , the HPC would like to see <br /> sessions on ( 1 ) methods of evaluating historic resources , ( 2 ) evaluation of cultural <br /> landscapes , and (3 ) a ` mock ' COA application and hearing , as in prior years . <br />
