006
tenth National Register site in the unincorporated areas of Orange County . Staff finds
that the Dr . Arch Jordan House meets the criteria for eligibility for listing on the National
Register .
3 . Questions from the Commission
None .
4 . Comments from the Public
None .
5 . Close Public Hearing
With no one wishing to be sworn in for public comment, Allison closed the public
hearing portion of the meeting .
6 . HPC Discussion and Recommendation
Dickinson stated that he had an opportunity years ago to look at this house when it was
for sale and found it in very good condition inside , very intact. It was interesting that it
had the plank walls still surviving . The projecting front gable was typical in the last part
of the 1800 ' s . From his experience in Orange County, he definitely goes along with
Criteria C in which this house embodies a very high quality of Italianate architecture in
Orange County . Rarely, certainly in the Piedmont, is a house seen that is executed as
attractively as this one . It has quite nice vertical massing - most of the detailing is still
there . Dickinson has no trouble at all embracing it under Criteria C for architecture .
Also , the significance of the relationship of the Dr . Arch Jordan House to the school
certainly makes sense to also authorize this nomination under Criteria A .
Anderson stated that Dr. Jordan ' s son had told her that his father had a very good practice
and had devised a pill for his patients that was very effective . These patients happened to
be in Durham, so this was after he had moved . The drugstore was run by two men,
Council and Bernard, and when they saw that this medicine was so effective , that he gave
it to so many people and they kept coming back to have it filled, they asked if they could
patent it. Dr . Jordan said that they could , so they were the ones that started the BC
Headache Company that existed for so long . Anderson isn ' t sure if it still exists now .
But according to his son, Dr . Jordan is the originator of that formula.
Allison stated that they are in the process of doing local landmark designations into the
coming years and this certainly is a house that, once it is on the registry , he sees no
problem with going forward and is free to come back to the Commission for discussion of
landmark designation . There are some significant . tax benefits from local landmark
designation .
6
