095 <br /> Historic Preservation Commission <br /> Report to the Planning Board <br /> February 4 , 1998 <br /> The Historic Preservation Commission met on January 28 . The Commission selected its <br /> top priorities for Local Historic Landmark Designation. The properties are : Benjamin <br /> Cole House, Chapel Hill Township ; and the Pittard <br /> Duke House, Eno Township ; Smith- <br /> Place, Cedar Grove Township . <br /> Staff reported that the Board of Commissioners approved a grant application to the State <br /> Historic Preservation Office for $ 18 , 000 to conduct a National Register study for the St . <br /> rridor. Notification of grant awards can be <br /> Mary ' s Road/Trading Path Historic Co <br /> expected by early April . <br /> Staff reported that an important historic site in Cedar Grove - the White Oak School - has <br /> come to the attention of local preservationists . White Oak School was built ca. 1927 by <br /> George Corbett, and for nearly three decades served as a school and an important focal <br /> point for the African-American community in Cedar Grove . The Northern Orange <br /> ill discuss this site at their February meeting . The <br /> County Black History Committee w <br /> White Oak School is probably eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. <br /> The HPC heard a report on a National Register nomination underway by a private <br /> consultant on the Arch Jordan Hou <br /> se. <br /> i <br /> At their February 25 meeting, the Commission will consider Landmark Designation <br /> Reports on four (4) Orange County properties that are already listed on the National <br /> Register: The Chatwood Estate, Bingham School , Moorefields , and Rigsbees Rock <br /> House. The Commission will vote to accept these reports, which would be forwarded to <br /> the State Historic Preservation Office for review and comment. If favorable, these four <br /> sites will be recommended for Local Historic Landmark status and presented at the May <br /> Public Hearing. These properties would be the first officially-designated Orange County <br /> Historic Landmarks. <br /> The HPC will present its annual Goals at the BOCC Work Session on February 10 . The <br /> HPC will request: continuation of $ 10 ,000 appropriation for local landmark studies ; <br /> $ 5 , 000 to assist in publication of historical architecture manuscript; and $ 8 , 000 in <br /> matching funds for the St. Mary ' s Road/Trading Path Historic Corridor National Register <br /> nomination. <br /> submitted by Don Belk <br />
