ORANGE COUNTY PLANNING DEPARTMENT 07 7
306F REVERE ROAD
HILLSBOROUGH , NORTH CAROLINA 27278
`rlf rt
_ v u
rt / lrtr '
HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
February 17 , 1998
George T . Cole
1430 Smith Level Road-
Chapel Hill , NC 27516
Re : Proposal to Nominate the Smith - Cole House to the National Register of Historic Places and
Designate as an Orange County Historic Landmark
Dear Mr . Cole :
1 am pleased to inform you that the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission has placed your
property , The Smith-Cole House, on its priority list for possible nomination to the National Register of
Historic Places and designation as a Local Historic Landmark . National Register listing and local
landmark designation identify the property as being significant to the Nation and to the community in
terms of its architecture , history, or cultural importance .
For owners of historic properties , National Register listing is a prestigious honor , for a property that
is listed on the National Register of Historic Places has been deemed is to the Nation ' s
heritage . The designation of a property as a Local Historic Landmark is also a symbol of distinction in
the community . The status of Local Historic Landmark is bestowed upon the property through the
adoption of an ordinance by the Orange County Board of Commissioners . In addition , once the
property becomes designated the owner is eligible for a 50 % tax deferral on the historic property . A
property listed on the National Register is also eligible for the new State of North Carolina tax credit
program for rehabilitation of historic buildings .
I have enclosed additional information on National Register listing , Local Landmark Designation , and
Historic Preservation State Tax Credit program .
I look forward to discussing this proposal with you in greater detail . You may contact me at ( 919 )
967 - 9251 , extension 2594, or via the Internet at dbelk@co . orange . nc . us .
Sincerely ,
am lee 19 doe
Donald R .
