004
for everything they got and were able to get some surplus items from the White schools . It was
fascinating to see this letter because it verified the actual date of when the school opened, on
October 17th, 1927, Belk is not sure if this date is the beginning of the school term, or the actual
opening . More= depth-research shows that this was Corbett land, George Corbett built the
school and it served a community function. Cathleen Turner and Belk learned more about this
community ' s connection with the string bands . One band became so well known that it made an
appearance in Carnegie Hall . Iris Chapman, a professor at Elon College, is doing some historical
research in this .area. In going beyond the Crossroads, there is a wealth of information. The
connections are there and Belk feels that anything this Commission can do to help out with that
effort would be worthwhile. There is a real emphasis in the State Office right now to find out
more about African-American history and resources .
Belk will look into this further and report back to the Commission.
f. 1998 CLG Grant Application : St. Mary ' s Road/Trading Path Historic Corridor
ill go out next week to let the residents along the corridor
Belk reported that this draft letter w
know that the County has applied for the grant.
Satterfield referred to the third paragraph asking if the availability of state tax credits needs to be
added?
Belk agreed that they should be added to change the fifth sentence to read "sites may benefit
from the availability of state and federal tax credits . . . " .
At this point Belk added that also there are the four National Register properties that have
already agreed and have been waiting for the Historic Preservation Commission to get back in
touch with them. A letter has been sent to them explaining staff constraints and reassuring them
that the designation of their property is still a priority . These properties are : 1 ) Bingham
School, 2) Moorefields, 3 ) Chatwood Estate and 4) the Riggsbee Rock House. For the February
Historic Preservation Commission meeting, notices will be sent out to the property owners . At
this meeting, the landmark designation report will be before the Commission. If these are
accepted by the Commission, they will be sent to SHPO . They will have days to comment.
Then the Commission will take into account SHPO ' s comments at the March Historic
Preservation Commission meeting. It will then go for public hearing in May .
g. Announcement: Economic Impact Study of Historic Preservation in NC Released
January 21
Courtesy of Commissioner William Crowther, Belk distributed the "Economic Impacts Study of
Historic Preservation" just released from Preservation North Carolina.
