8 <br /> <br />The Board considered voting to approve a proclamation designating November 2019 as <br />“Dispute Settlement Center Month” and authorize the Chair to sign. <br /> <br />Former Commissioner Mia Burroughs read and received the proclamation. She <br />extended greetings from Frances Henderson, who is traveling, and expressed appreciation for <br />the support over the years, and for purchasing their services. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: The Dispute Settlement Center began as a community mediation center in <br />September 1978 to provide mediation services to Orange County residents, and was the first <br />community mediation center in North Carolina. The Center now serves over 3,000 people <br />through mediation, training, facilitation, and Restorative Practices for youth services, and is an <br />essential partner for the courts, the schools, and government units, and a resource for <br />residents. <br /> <br />The Center is celebrating its 40th year as a statewide leader in the provision of its services. <br /> <br />ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />DISPUTE SETTLEMENT CENTER MONTH PROCLAMATION <br /> <br />Whereas, the Dispute Settlement Center began as a community mediation center in September <br />1978 to provide mediation services to Orange County residents; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the Dispute Settlement Center was the first community mediation center in North <br />Carolina, and assisted in the formation of others around the state; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the Dispute Settlement Center now serves over 3,000 people through mediation, <br />training, facilitation, and Restorative Practices for youth services; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the Dispute Settlement Center is an essential partner for the courts, the schools, and <br />government units, and a resource for residents; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the Dispute Settlement Center is a statewide leader in the provision of these services; <br />and <br /> <br />Whereas, the Dispute Settlement Center is celebrating its 40th year of operation; <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Board of County Commissioners of Orange County, North <br />Carolina, do hereby proclaim November 2019 as “DISPUTE SETTLEMENT CENTER MONTH” <br />in Orange County and invite residents to observe this month with appropriate programs, <br />ceremonies, and activities. <br /> <br />This, the 15th Day of October, 2019. <br /> <br />A motion was made by Commissioner McKee, seconded by Commissioner Price for <br />the Board to approve a proclamation designating November 2019 as “Dispute Settlement <br />Center Month” and authorized the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> <br />5.
