Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To join Federal and State governments in designating the month of May as Older <br />Americans Month, a time to honor our older citizens for their contributions to society. Also, to <br />designate the week of May 13 through May 20 as Senior Center Week in Orange County. This <br />is a time to recognize our local senior centers as focal points for providing opportunities and <br />services to older citizens. <br />BACKGROUND: For a number of years, the Orange County Commissioners have issued an <br />Older Americans Month and Senior Center Week Proclamation. In the year 2001., there are <br />approximately 14,363 Orange County residents who are sixty years of age and older, and 2,614 <br />residents are over eighty years old. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board designate May as Older <br />Americans Month and May 13 through May 20 as Senior Center Week in Orange County and <br />authorize the Chair to sign the proclamations. <br />
