6
1 p.m., in an effort to honor family caregivers for caring selflessly for loved-ones. Staff hopes this
2 day of care will provide needed respite for family caregivers, while enabling attendees to
3 engage in wellness, education and supportive services.
4
5 The Department of Aging recognizes that family caregivers are truly the backbone of their
6 families and communities. Many however are under great stress and do not always have
7 the information they need when taking responsibility for a loved one's care. This November,
8 the Department is proud to offer a variety of caregiving related programs and services for
9 individualized and community caregivers, which include:
10 • Special designation in the Senior Times publication for activities and events geared
11 towards supporting caregivers;
12 • A Care Partner Collaborative respite co-op group;
13 • Caregiver Support groups;
14 • Dementia Education Collaborative;
15 • Trainings for community partners and individuals;
16 • Memory Caf6s;
17 • In-home caregiver assistance;
18 • Options Counseling;
19 • Memory Screenings; and
20 • A Caregiver monthly E-Newsletter.
21
22 For many years the Orange County Board of Commissioners has issued proclamations for
23 older adults throughout Orange County. If approved, this will be the first year the Board joins
24 with the Federal and State governments in designating the month of November as Family
25 Caregivers Month as a time to honor family caregivers and care partners for their tireless work
26 in service to their loved ones and as the unsung heroes of both their families and communities.
27
28 Janice Tyler, Director on Aging, said this will be the first time the County has
29 celebrated National Caregivers Month. She introduced Sheila Evans, who represents over
30 20,000 caregivers across the county.
31 Sheila Evans said several years ago her husband developed dementia, and she had
32 to retire to take care of him. She said she got through this journey through a support group
33 she attended with her husband at the Seymour Center; adult day care; and by becoming part
34 of the Project Engage program to teach seniors to become leaders in the community. She
35 said through that program, she received support and learned about resources. She said the
36 Senior Center has a program that gives people a way to try out medical equipment. She said
37 she received some respite and medical services for herself and her husband, and the
38 incredible support she received through the Seymour Center helped her through her journey,
39 and now she is able to help others get the resources they need.
40 Janice Tyler read the proclamation:
41
42 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
43 PROCLAMATION
44
45 FAMILY CAREGIVERS MONTH — NOVEMBER 2019
46 "CAREGIVER DAY OF CARE" — NOVEMBER 9, 2019
47
48 WHEREAS, Orange County estimates suggest there are more than 20,000 family caregivers in
49 Orange County; and
50
