Several <br />interview participants mentioned jobs requiring <br />“administrative skills” or “administrative support roles.” <br />As discussed in detail below, computer and software <br />skills are especially important. For these jobs, as Strickler <br />told Hanover, an associate’s degree is “certainly career- <br />enhancing.” Durham Tech’s existing office <br />administration programs can meet the demand for <br />individuals with relevant training. <br /> <br />PUBLIC SAFETY <br />Local government is one of the largest <br />employers in Orange County,19 and the <br />most significant workforce need among <br />government jobs appears to be public <br />safety training. Several interview <br />participants mentioned law enforcement, <br />emergency medical services (EMS), and <br />fire protection technology as areas in <br />which Durham Tech could contribute to <br />Orange County’s needs. Durham Tech’s <br />website indicates that law enforcement 20 <br />and EMS21 programs are in progress at the <br />Orange County campus in fall 2017,22 but <br />fire protection technology is not yet <br />available in Orange County.23 <br />Figure 1.2: Public Safety Program Needs <br />Dinah Jeffries, who oversees Orange County Emergency Services, told Hanover that the <br />county could benefit from Durham Tech providing necessary training for a variety of public <br />safety workers, especially fire and EMS workers. The anonymous leader thought that several <br />areas in the county would benefit from high-quality local training for “sheriff’s deputies, <br />emergency medical technicians, and rural fire districts.” Strickler pointed out UNC Health Care <br />employs its own “hospital police” and “hospital-based ambulance service,” including its own <br />workforce of EMTs.
