Agenda Items / Notes (May 9, 2012) <br /> <br />1. Call to order <br /> Chair Gordon called the meeting to order at 5:45 PM <br />. <br />2. Introductions <br /> Introduction of members, staff and guest present <br /> <br />3. Guest Speakers – Pat Underhill with Compass Turf along with Jim Orr – Chapel Hill-Assistant Director, <br />Recreation Operations and Marty Pomerantz- UNC- Director of Campus Recreation <br />(See attached copy of PowerPoint Presentation) <br />Highlights: <br />• Are we managing our assets best for the communities use? <br />• Quality vs. Quantity <br />• One artificial turf field= programming capability of 3 to 5 natural turf fields <br />• Pros – More play time, softer less maintenance; more versatile use <br />• Cons – More upfront cost; more referrer cost; need sleeve inserts <br />Questions <br />• Heat? – Does get hot 88 degree day = 120-140 degrees on field. Irrigate or manage programs <br />around peak times. UNC gets no complaints. <br />• Injuries? For data go to http://www.scienceofsocceronline.com/ and http://www.fifa.com/ <br /> <br />4. Possible Phase 2 of the Interactive Parks Locator Map – Marabeth Carr and Beth Young inquired if <br />the IPWG had any interest in pursuing a Phase 2 map for locating greenways and trails. Orange County <br />IT Department is willing to meet with small group like Phase 1 to discuss. IPWG agreed to form same <br />group as phase 1. However; due to IT’s work schedule the first meeting will not take place until late <br />summer/early fall. <br /> <br />5. Status Report - Community Use of Schools Pilot Project – Dave Stancil <br />Dave gave an overview of his discussions with the Orange County Schools and is waiting for a <br />response. (See attached handouts on Community Use of Schools for Recreation) <br /> <br />6. Directors Reports <br />A. Orange County – Dave Stancil <br />• Adult and Youth Volleyball and Basketball underway <br />• This summer full and ½ day camps offered (most are already full) <br />• June 2nd two events scheduled – Fishing Rodeo and Fairview Live <br />• Since last meeting two events – Easter Egg Hunt and Earth Fair <br />• Has a $15,000 grant for Archaeological study at Hollow Rock Access Area <br />• Looking into developing community gardens at Blackwood Farm <br />B. Town of Chapel Hill - Butch Kisiah <br />• Capital Projects – Monthly Report online <br />• Renovation of Cedar Falls Restrooms underway <br />• Lights - Inline Hockey at Southern Comm. Park, tennis courts at Ephesus Park <br />• Master Plan Reports coming along (Parks and Greenways) June 12 public forum <br />• ADA assessment of all of the playgrounds in town <br />• Registration of summer camps underway ( one filled up in less than 3 hours) <br />• Earth Action Day – very successful <br />• Locally grown – coming up this summer <br />• July 4th at Kenan Stadium. <br />C. Town of Hillsborough - Mike Gering <br />• Awarded a PARTIF grant for $425,000 for Riverwalk <br />• Wayfinding signs installed around town <br />• Parks & Rec and Tree Board may be consolidated <br />• Hog Day May 18th and 19th <br />• Town won – “Great Streets Award”
