MINUTES <br />ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES <br />December 17, 2012 <br />2 <br />difference in the lives of the families who receive toys. Ms. Hinton noted she also received an email <br />from an Orange County employee who wanted to volunteer with her young child. She had been a <br />recipient of toys in the past and wanted to teach her child about giving back. Ms. Hinton thanked <br />the Board for all of their help and support. <br /> <br />Pat Garavaglia added that FRIENDS will probably not be able to provide food for next years’ event <br />because they will likely have no budget for it. <br /> <br />Nancy Coston added that Claire Millar was at the agency every day last week sorting toys. Arthrell <br />Sanders has escorted many families and Pat has been all over assisting with the event. Ms. <br />Coston thanked the Board for all of their support. <br /> <br />Ms. Coston told the Board that the UNC Basketball Toys for Tots event was very successful and the <br />agency collected 813 toys. She also reminded the Board to vote for the agency tree as part of the <br />Triangle Christmas Tree Challenge. She noted that she and Denise Shaffer attended the event at <br />the Carolina Brewery which was really nice. <br /> <br />Ms. Hinton added that the UNC event generated an additional $1,000 donation from a Carolina fan <br />who heard about the event and gave a check to Eric Montross. There was an article published in <br />Tar Heels Today about the event that was sent to the Ram’s Club. <br /> <br />Doyle’s Bar raised $6,000 and bought many wonderful toys for the Toy Chest. <br /> <br />Crown Honda brought a van load of toys today and mentioned that they also sponsor several kids <br />through the sponsorship program. <br /> <br />Albert Williams commended staff on the effort involved in putting the toy event together. Ms. <br />Coston noted that there is a core group of staff who work hard to make the program happen. Many <br />of them work behind the scenes scanning and do not get the thanks they deserve. <br /> <br />Ms. Coston also mentioned the agency will continue giving out toys and food or gift cards the rest of <br />this week to families in need. <br /> <br />3. Executive Session <br /> <br />Arthrell Sanders moved into Executive Session pursuant to § 143-318.11(a)(6). Claire Millar <br />seconded the motion. The motion was carried without dissent. <br /> <br />VII. Announcements <br /> <br />The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at the Hillsborough <br />Commons, 113 Mayo Street, Hillsborough, North Carolina at 4:00 pm. <br /> <br />Arthrell Sanders moved to adjourn the meeting at 4:45 pm.
