ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />2 <br />RESOLUTION OF APPRECIATION <br />TO STUDENTS FROM <br />VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE <br />FOR THEIR WORK AT THE OCCANEECHI VILLAGE <br />WHEREAS, the Town of Hillsborough has a rich and culturally diverse history, reflected in the <br />recreation of the historically significant Occaneechi Native American village along <br />the banks of the Eno River; and, <br />WHEREAS, thousands of visitors tour the Occaneechi village site each year to learn and <br />experience haw Native Americans lived and worked hundreds of yeazs ago; and, <br />WHEREAS, over the yeazs, periodic flooding of the Eno has damaged the Occaneechi village, <br />causing it to fall into disrepair; and, <br />WHEREAS, from Mazch 4-9, fifteen Virginia Tech students spent their spring break helping to <br />restore damage to the Occaneechi village; and, <br />WHEREAS, under the guidance of tribal members John Blackfeather Jefferies and Joe Lopez, <br />the students made repairs to the site, trimmed brush, cleaned along the river and <br />creek banks, cut saplings to construct two new lodges, and performed other tasks <br />associated with the restoration of the village; and, <br />WHEREAS, the hard work of these students enhanced the visual aspects of the Occaneechi. <br />village, which once again takes its place as one of the most historically significant <br />sites for visitors to Orange County. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Boazd of Commissioners expresses <br />its sincere appreciation and gratitude to Shane Johnson, Aaron Hood, Cazlos <br />Fernandez, Melanie Murray, Richard Hite, Abdullah Al Masud, Reuben Hintz, <br />Chazles Hockenbrought, David Ficke, Angie Cazlon, Katherine Alexander, Kristen <br />Cantu, Latoya King, Brandon Boe and Jason Herran of Virginia Polytechnic <br />Institute, for their service to the citizens of Orange County through their restoration <br />ofthe Occaneechi Native American village on the banks of the Eno River. <br />This the third day of April, 2001 <br />Stephen H.
