Authorized by the N.C. Constitution in 1776, UNC was
chartered by the N. C. General Assembly on Dec. 11, 1789.
PlayMakers Repertory Company (PRC) has been North Carolina's
premiere professional theater company in residence at UNC-CH since
1976. PRC produces entertaining, relevant & courageous work that
tells stories from and for a multiplicity of perspectives and creates
transformational impact in our immediate and extended communities.
PRC produces a diverse program of 10 productions each season in 2
performance venues housed in the Joan H. Gillings Center for
Dramatic Art: the Paul Green Theatre, a 550-seat Mainstage thrust,
and the Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre, a 265-seat flexible space.
PRC's productions serve up to 50,000 audience members annually
from over 50 counties. Education, outreach, and community
engagement are major components of PRC's mission & priorities,
having served over 125,000 students ages 11-18 through student
matinees, teaching artist residencies & award-winning summer
conservatories since their inception in 1984. In addition, PlayMakers
Mobile tours free streamlined productions through the community,
including Title-1 schools, homeless shelters and treatment facilities.
PRC is one of the last resident companies in the US and has been
honored by both the Drama League of New York & American Theatre
magazine as one of the "best regional theatres in America."
Founded as the Carolina Playmakers in 1919, PRC is the birthplace of
the American Folk Play and continues to be a place where social
justice and storytelling combine to create lasting community impact.
As the first female Producing Artistic Director of PRC, OBIE Award-
winning actor, director, and teacher Vivienne Benesch is in her 3rd
full season. In 2017 she received the SDC Foundation's prestigious
Zelda Fichandler Award, recognizing her outstanding creativity and
her promise for the future. Since her arrival PRC has produced 6
world premieres and has received the 2017 50/50 Applause Award,
given annually by the International Center for Women Playwrights for
Gender Equity in programming. Our 2018-19 season features 100%
female representation of directors on our main stage, and 3 plays
written by female people of color.
UNC's current 13-member Board of Trustees is composed of 2
African Americans and 11 Caucasians. PRC's current 23-member
Advisory Council consists of 2 African Americans, 1 Latino and 20
Caucasians. PRC's 2017-18 staff of 41 full/part-time and 90-contract
employees included 12 African Americans, 4 Asians, 3 Latinos, and
112 Caucasians. Despite a culture committed to change, the diversity
in the building has not improved as much as our diversity on the
stage. The majority of our audience members are Caucasians. We
continually work to diversify both our employees and our audience.
