Inspired by our 100-year
history of playmaking in North Carolina, PlayMakers Mobile partners
with area nonprofits, community organizations, residence and
recreational facilities, and local schools and libraries to present
professional-quality productions featuring members of UNC's
Professional Actor Training MFA Program (PATP). These graduate
students portray multiple roles with minimal props and costumes,
engaging the audience and adjusting the show according to each
venue demand. Audiences receive a study guide, featuring a
synopsis of the play, information about the playwright, and some
history and insight about the work as it fits into the theatre canon and
engage with an education professional from our staff.
PlayMakers' Associate Artistic Director, Alejandro Rodriguez, will
direct our 2019-20 PlayMakers Mobile production, featuring the work
of seminal American playwright Thornton Wilder as a springboard for
storytelling. This year's tour will present a medley of Wilder's short
plays including PULLMAN CAR HIAWATHA and NUSCUNTUR POETAE
as well as original music and movement created by our MFA student
ensemble. Wilder's work exemplifies the American experience as told
on stage; reinventing his plays for new, underserved audiences
creates a unique experience that only PlayMakers can undertake. The
tour will be presented throughout the month of October with a final
performance planned at the historic Forest Theater on UNC's
campus.
