Moore, ext 2250 <br />Proclamation <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8.181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To designate the week of April 23-27, 2001 as Civil Rights Awareness Week. <br />BACKGROUND: The Orange County Department of Human Rights and Relations partnering <br />with the Southeast/Caribbean Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity, U.S. Department of <br />Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Human .Rights and Community Relations <br />Commissions and Departments throughout the Southeast, will host the "Southeast Regional <br />Civil Rights Summit", A ril 23-27 2001 at the Sheraton Hotel in Cha el Hill North Carolina. <br />The theme of the Summit will be "A Commitment to Fairness; The Path to Equality". <br />Civil rights professionals, human rights workers, and advocates working with organizations like <br />HUD, EEOC, community-based non-profits, and state and local human relations commissions <br />will receive training on issues of fair housing, employment, immigration, mediation/conciliation, <br />and other topics like racial profiling, bridging the achievement gap, media strategies for civil <br />rights groups, and inter-ethnic conflict. Additionally, there will be presentations on the changing <br />demographics of the South, and the role of the religious community in the past, present and <br />future of the Civil Rights Movement, as well as a practical skills track offering CLE credit for <br />attorneys who practice or are interested in practicing civil rights law. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with this decision. <br />RECOMMENDATION: The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the proclamation <br />recognizing April 23 -27, 2001 as Civil Rights Awareness Week and authorizing the Chair to <br />sign the Proclamation. <br />
