A proclamation to acknowledge the
week of April 22-28, 2001 as Orange County Govemment Week is provided as Attachment I.
For the past eleven years, Orange County has celebrated County Govemment Week by
sponsoring the "Official for a Day" Program. On this day, students from the three high schools
are partnered with department heads and management staff during the morning to gain an
understanding of county govemment operations. After the mentoring, a mock board of county
commissioners' meeting is held whereupon students address issues often presented to the
Board. The "Official for a Day" Program is scheduled for Tuesday, April 24, 2001. An agenda
for the day is provided as Attachment II.
In addition to the "Official for a Day" Program, staff from the Manages Office and the EMS
Department are working with the schools to coordinate tours of the Emergency Management
Center. These tours will be offered to elementary school students and scheduled throughout
the week. Students will be given an opportunity to visit the 9-1-1 Center, view the various
rescue vehicles and discuss emergency operations in Orange County.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with this decision.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the proclamation
and endorse the planned events.
