DocuSign Envelope ID: F910E8F7-37AE-4D5A-AED4-B1E2AED21F77
Organization Carrboro Elementary School (CES) is a community-based Pre K-5th
Description grade school that has been serving students for over 50 years. The
school has an English-Spanish dual-language program and uses arts
programming to enhance multicultural learning and to introduce
students to art forms and performance from around the world.
The arts are important to CES. All students attend art and music
once a week for 45 minutes each. In music, students sing, move,
listen, play instruments, and compose. Grade levels perform musical
selections in assemblies and at year-end performances. This past
winter our 2nd graders performed "A Trip to the Tropics" featurng
songs in English, Fijian and Spanish and each student had a
speaking part. All 4th and 5th graders have the opportunity to learn
songs before school and participate in the singing at the Carrboro
Town Hall Tree Lighting event.
In art class, students use paint, drawing materials, clay, fibers, and
mixed media and study both artists and types of art. In our extra-
curricular theater program, 4th and 5th graders have created and
produced full-length theatrical productions for the past nine years,
including "The Little Mermaid" in 2017, an original production in 2018
called "A Night of Grimm and Other Fairy Tales," and in 2019 "Mary
Poppins" involving 145 student participants. The school community
and PTA provide impressive support every year, giving close to
$2,400 in donations and services toward the production in 2019.
Furthermore, our art/theater teacher runs a 24-hour play festival for
5th graders and a popular musical theater camp for 4 weeks during
the summer.
Arts programming at CES enjoys broad support from the
administration, staff, families, and the PTA. The PTA works to ensure
that arts programming is funded; in 2017 they donated half of the
cost for new theater lights. PTA volunteers coordinate the school's
cultural arts performances and the Reflections Cultural Arts Contest.
During FY19-20, will No
your organization
receive operational
support funding from
the North Carolina
Arts Council or the
North Carolina
Department of
Natural and Cultural
Resources?
Organization's EIN 566001004
Organization http://ces.chccs.kl2.nc.us
Website
Authorizing Official's Ms. Jillian LaSerna
Name
Authorizing Official's Principal
