ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: .tune 7, 2005
Action Age~a
Item No. - V
SUBJECT: Contract Renewal with UNC Hospitals
DEPARTMENT: Social Services
ATTACHMENT(S):
Contract
PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Nancy Coston, 245-2800
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough
Chapel Hill
Durham
Mebane
732-8181
968-4501
688-7331
336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To continue the contract for income maintenance staff at UNC Hospitals.
BACKGROUND: The Department of Social Services has had a contract with UNC Hospitals
continuously since 1977 tc provide Social Services staff on-site at the hospital. These staff
members -income maintenance caseworkers -allow patients at the hospital to apply for
Medicaid while at the hospital. The contract provides for the salary, benefits, and indirect costs
associated with three full-time staff and part-time supervision that are available at the hospital.
The Social Services Board has reviewed this contract and recommends that it be continued.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: Under the terms of this contract, UNC Hospitals will reimburse the
County for the non-federal financial share of these Social Services staff positions. The
reimbursement to the County for FY2005-2006 is estimated to be $84,267. Because UNC
Hospitals pays the Department the non-federal share for this service, no County dollars are
used.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board accept the Social
Services Board recommendation and approve the contract renewal with UNC Hospitals and
authorize the Chair to sign.
