1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: October 15, 2019 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. 4-c <br /> SUBJECT: Dispute Settlement Center Month Proclamation <br /> DEPARTMENT: County Manager <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Proclamation Bonnie Hammersley, 245-2300 <br /> PURPOSE: To approve a proclamation designating November 2019 as "Dispute Settlement <br /> Center Month". <br /> BACKGROUND: The Dispute Settlement Center began as a community mediation center in <br /> September 1978 to provide mediation services to Orange County residents, and was the first <br /> community mediation center in North Carolina. The Center now serves over 3,000 people <br /> through mediation, training, facilitation, and Restorative Practices for youth services, and is an <br /> essential partner for the courts, the schools, and government units, and a resource for residents. <br /> The Center is celebrating its 40t" year as a statewide leader in the provision of its services. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with this item. <br /> SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: There is no Orange County Social Justice Goal associated with <br /> this item. <br /> ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: There is no Orange County Environmental Responsibility Goal <br /> impact associated with this item. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board congratulate the Dispute <br /> Settlement Center on its 40 years of service to the community, and approve and authorize the <br /> Chair to sign the proclamation designating November 2019 as "Dispute Settlement Center <br /> Month". <br />
