Estes Hills is
a neighborhood school in the truest sense, as many students from
the surrounding homes walk or bike to school every day. In the
current academic year (2018-2019), Estes Hills Elementary serves 474
children from kindergarten through fifth grade. The school has 23
traditional classrooms, and offers programs in Exceptional
Education, Gifted Education, Head Start pre-school, and English as a
Second Language. Our student body is fairly evenly divided along
gender lines (51% Male / 49% Female) and has a diverse racial
composition: White (571/6), Hispanic (151/6), African American (101/6),
Asian (101/6), and Multi-Racial (81/6).
Estes Hills has 23 traditional classroom teachers; 100%are fully
licensed, 48% have advanced degrees, and 11 are National Board
Certified. Our school offers Art and Music instruction in accordance
with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for elementary
school students, with a full-time professional in each "specials"
discipline: Art, Music, French, and Physical Education (which
incorporates dance). These teachers supplement classroom time
with extracurricular events including 3 choral performances by
students per year, 2 "family art nights" per year where students can
help paint decorations for school events such as the Book Fair, a
school mural, a French cafe in which all students order in French and
sample French foods, and a French poetry declamation held on a
weekend in the spring. For the first time, this year, a Drama Club was
founded which created its own sets and costumes and performed 3
shows of "The Wizard of Oz" for the community in February. The arts
are alive and wells at Estes Hills, but these efforts largely depend on
parent donations and volunteer hours, in the absence of funding.
The mission of the Estes Hills PTA is to serve the whole community
of the school - the students, teachers, staff and families - by
providing necessary resources to support the highest quality
educational environment possible. The PTA is comprised of parent
volunteers (Executive Board is 80%female, 100%White), and seeks
to promote the cultural arts in education by bringing professional
artists to perform at our school. These performances both educate
and inspire the students to undertake their own artistic pursuits.
During FY19-20, will No
your organization
receive operational
support funding from
the North Carolina
Arts Council or the
North Carolina
Department of
Natural and Cultural
Resources?
r)mani-7atinn'c PInl RnnIAngni
