With over 25%of <br /> Phillips' students receiving free and reduced lunches, it is not <br /> difficult to believe that their families would have limited resources for <br /> attending live performances of music and theater. Further, with <br /> young people becoming increasingly reliant upon handheld media <br /> devices as their preferred source for entertainment, exposure to <br /> vibrant live performances remains an important goal for the Cultural <br /> Arts programming at Phillips. <br /> The curriculum tie-ins are as follows. <br /> Kim So Ra: Performing Arts, Music Education, History, Multicultural <br /> education <br /> Children's Theater of Charlotte: Performing Arts, Theatre, Character <br /> Education <br /> Mike Wiley: Performing Arts, Theatre, History, Character Education, <br /> United States History <br /> Sonia de los Santos: Performing Arts, Music, Character Education, <br /> History, Multicultural education <br /> Audience Description School Population (as of May 2019) <br /> Total number of students in grades 6-8: 664 <br /> Students identifying themselves as Asian: 134 (201/6) <br /> Students identifying themselves as African American: 93 (141/6) <br /> Students identifying themselves as White: 315 (471/6) <br /> Students identifying themselves as Hispanic/Latino: 80 (12%) <br /> Students identifying themselves as Bi- or Multi-racial: 41 (61/6) <br /> Students identifying themselves as Native American: 1 (<1%) <br /> Students identified as Exceptional Children: 78 (129/6) <br /> The student population consists of approximately 45%female and <br /> 55% male, and 170 students qualify for free or reduced lunch (270/6). <br /> Additionally, approximately 20 Teachers, Administrators and Staff will <br /> attend each performance. <br /> Location Description Three of the four performances will take place in the Phillips <br /> Auditorium, and the fourth performance will take place in the Phillips <br /> Gymnasium. Both venues are handicapped-accessible, and students <br /> with IEP accommodations or 504 Plans will be accommodated as <br /> planned for in their individualized education plans. <br />
