After a
visit to view the Durham Civil Rights Mural, students will work with a
local artist of color to design and create a mural that celebrates the
many leaders of the Civil Rights Movement in our area, bringing
home the concept of personal activism for the students. The
permanent and public nature of the mural will stand as a reminder
that we all must consider equity and access for all every day in our
schools and community.
Project Start Date September 2019
(no earlier than July
1, 2019)
Project End Date (no November 2019
later than June 30,
2020)
Project Goals • Art will be integrated into the social studies curriculum, especially
around the study of civil rights and equity in the fourth grade.
• Students will create their own ideas for images to be included in the
mural after visiting the Durham Civil Rights Mural.
• Students will collaborate with local artist, Tarish Pipkins, to design
and paint the mural in a central hallway of the school.
• Students will learn about local activists involved in the Civil Rights
Movement.
• Students will share what they learned about inequities in our
schools and communities and discuss their strategies for equal
access to all our shared resources.
• The mural will be a long-lasting work of art that will serve as a
reminder of equity and social justice to be enjoyed by the Scroggs
community for many years to come.
Audience Description Scroggs Elementary has a unique population that blends families of
widely different socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. The
population of 472 students is made up of 0.4%Alaska Native, 9.7%
Asian, 11.4% Hispanic, 15.6% Black/African American, 54.2%White,
and 8.7% multiracial students. Of these, about 24%are part of the
Free or Reduced Lunch Program. While all students at Scroggs
Elementary will be involved in the painting of the mural, the fourth
grade students will have the most responsibilities. They will be the
ones to travel on the field trip, make proposals for the mural, help
with the design, and work closely with the local artist to create the
mural.
Location Description Fourth grade students will take a field trip to Durham, NC to view the
Durham Civil Rights mural there (120 Morris Street; near the Durham
Arts Council). All designing and painting of the mural will take place
at Scroggs Elementary in Chapel Hill, NC, under the direction of their
art teacher, Sarah Cornette, along with local artist, Tarish Pipkins.
