DocuSign Envelope ID:09A874BD-81F7-4D43-8B3A-C6AE144D59D0
Project/Program For Kids By Kids is a new initiative staffed by experienced
Summary professionals in the fields of creative writing, textile and visual arts,
and book design. We believe children's books are a powerful way to
convey meaningful ideas, can touch the hearts and minds of children
and families, and inspire important conversations about things that
matter. Working in collaboration with children and families of diverse
populations, we create picture books that reflect, support and voice
the ideals of our non-profit partnering organizations. We make a
place for their voices to be expressed through high-quality
educational programming.
Mariposas (which means "butterflies" in Spanish) was born in 2013
with the vision of igniting the voice, identity and role of Latina youth
and their families in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community. These
middle and high school girls follow a curriculum that addresses the
social-emotional health, academic performance, and democratic
engagement of the participants. They focus on six themes:
determination, self-discipline, curiosity, activism, tenacity and
personal safety. Tradition, family narratives, social, racial and political
issues of the Latino diaspora also underscores their studies.
The For Kids By Kids/Mariposas collaboration seeks to further the
goals of this powerful organization by aiding these young women and
their families to: strengthen their voices; empower their agency;
bring out their creative gifts; and communicate these messages.
When finished, Mariposas have expressed desire that the final book
is written in both English and Spanish.
Project Start Date September 15, 2019
(no earlier than July
1 , 2019)
Project End Date (no June 1, 2020
later than June 30,
2020)
Project Goals To provide quality positive programming during two sequential in-
depth arts residencies
To encourage children's higher order thinking skills and creative
problem-solving in an integral and on-going process
To nurture deep thought and careful expression that a long-term
project requires
To further children's understanding of book creation, writing and
illustrating through hands-on, direct experience
To increase literary skills through stressing parallels as children
analyze, apply concepts and edit their own texts
To facilitate children seeing themselves as illustrators as they link
compelling visual images to their story
To convey the pride and positivity that comes from the cumulative
effect of collaboration after bringing a complex project to fruition
To give children and their families an active and vital voice through
the arts
