The artists will lead a 3-day workshop on the history of hip-
hop, lyric writing, and beat-making. Local community members will
also be brought in to facilitate conversations about social issues
relevant to teenagers, and use the substance of those conversations
and independent research to feed the creative writing process. The
project will culminate in a final performance and release of an album
of collected spoken word and hip-hop songs created by the students.
Project Start Date August 2019
(no earlier than July
1, 2019)
Project End Date (no May 2020
later than June 30,
2020)
Project Goals • About 25-40 students (with recruitment priority on students of color)
will participate in a year-long cohort that will meet weekly as part of
the creative writing/arts curriculum opportunity that will address
equity needs of our school district.
• Two acclaimed hip-hop artists will work with the students (through
video access in the first semester, and in January, via a 3-day
workshop at the school) to produce spoken word pieces.
• Students will perform their spoken word/hip-hop creations during a
live performance at CHHS.
• The students' work will be made into an album that will be released
in May 2020.
• Students involved in the program will show improved academic
success, have fewer behavioral issues, and better school
attendance, when compared to the previous year.
• Students involved with the program will feel more a part of the
school community, and show increased positive self-esteem and
self-confidence.
Audience Description The team staff member at Chapel Hill High School, Michael Irwin, will
reach out largely to students of color, especially African Americans,
to be a part of the hip-hop program.
