As time permits, the Boards may wish to
discuss same or all of these topics, and to identify any points that staffs may need to research
and bring back as the subject of subsequent reports.
a. National Trust for Historic Preservation
During meetings of the Smart Growth Commission in recent months, there has been discussion
of factors that contribute to the problem of urban sprawl. One concern raised has been the
difficulty of acquiring large sites needed for schools in accordance with the acreage guidelines
established by the State Department of Public Instruction (DPI). School systems often have to
look for these sites further and further out from the center of the urban area as there are
relatively fewer large acreage tracts available in or near urban centers.
