DocuSign Envelope ID: EE92BA24-A67F-4F4A-8067-F8FOEF642894
Project/Program This application is a request for financial support to participate in a
Summary two week artist residency this October at Hambidge Center in Georgia
and purchase materials to create art during the residency. With
support from OCAC, I will be able to take time off from my jobs to
produce and document new work which I will use in future
applications for funding, residency, and exhibition opportunities. My
work explores notions of femininity and feminism, high and low forms
of art making, and dreams and disasters. I am submitting five images
of my Draperies. These works are made from used patterned bed
sheets which I sew myself. Each Drapery is similar to a finished
garment in that it is one fluid piece that hangs on a wooden wall
mount, which functions like a hanger or drapery rod. I use acrylics to
paint and stain the Draperies. The Draperies are influenced by
clothing and curtain construction, bodily orifices, and portals. During
my residency I will create new Draperies similar to the work included
in this application. The included budget covers materials including
paints (Golden fluid acrylics), brushes, wood, hardware, and other
supplies.
Community Impact There is no public component for this proposal.
Artist Experience My participation in past artist residencies led me to new directions in
the art that I make and my career as an artist. At artist residencies I
have made long lasting connections with artists who continue to be
collaborators, mentors, and friends--broadening my own network of
artistic peers. I have participated in artist residencies at the Byrdcliffe
Arts Colony in Woodstock, NY(2009); the Petrified Forest National
Park Artist Residency in Arizona (2009); and the Vermont Studio
Center (2010). Participating in artist residencies has pushed me to
consider my art within a greater context of contemporary art that is
not solely defined by where I live and work in Carrboro. Participating
in artist residencies has also inspired me to start an experimental
gallery, curate art shows, write about artists, and develop ideas that
will benefit artists based in Orange County and the Southeast. I am
co-director of an experimental gallery rooted in Chapel Hill called LOG
(www.log into log.com). I write about artists based in Orange County,
the Southeast, and beyond for an art blog called The Coastal Post
(www.thecoastalpost.com). With support from the OCAC, I will be able
to focus on the development of new art during my two week
residency at Hambidge.
PROJECT/PROG RAMP lease fill out the charts below with your project's expenses and
BUDGET income.
