Evaluation will focus
goals have been on both financial outcomes as well as the quality of the concerts and
met? their reception by the audience, our members, and the press. Our
financial goal in 2020 is to end the season with a surplus of at least
$1,000.
We will gauge audience reception through immediate reaction and
random exit interviews. The quality of our performances will be reviewed
from live recordings by the Artistic Director. The Board further will
evaluate published critical reviews (CVNC) and member feedback. For
example, the December 2018 concert was a significant departure from
VOICES' typical holiday concert in both the difficulty and cultural breadth
of the music and the performance styles. From a capella Russian
Orthodox to Hebrew to Western traditional Christian pieces, this concert
ended with four selections in Gospel style, including one original
composition and two from "Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration",
with guest pianist Kevin Johnson and undergraduate soloist from
Spellman College, Clarke Brown. It also ended with several standing
ovations and a highly complementary review from CVNC. Members were
ecstatic with the artistic result and enrollment jumped by over 20% in
January!
The Board also routinely examines trends in ticket sales, revenue
streams, expense lines, and member satisfaction as markers of
organizational health. In 2020, evaluation will also focus on the effect of
the joint concert in May, rather than separate Spring concerts, on each
of these measures.
Groups performing choral music have proliferated in the Triangle in
recent years. Voices has a long and proud tradition, but the Board works
constantly to ensure a welcoming environment and positive experience
for members, and performances that encourage audiences to come
again.
