In December, like last year, VOICES will
perform an eclectic mix of classical secular and sacred choral
arrangements with orchestra and soloist Leonard Rowe. In March,
CANTARI presents historical, classical African American music, hopefully
with the Spelman College Glee Club (pending confirmation). In May 2020,
VOICES and CANTARI appear in joint concert with selections by each
ensemble as well as a joint work featuring Shoko Abe.
A new goal for FY2020 is to work for social benefit in the community.
Voices will benefit the Interfaith Food Shuttle's Backpack Buddies
program at a Spring concert, repeating collaborative efforts to begin with
Summer Voices' concert 2019.
The fiscal goal is impacted by the repertoire selected and venues
available to Voices. As can be appreciated from the attached
income/expense statements and projections, our annual operating
budgets average $85,000 +/- 7,000 for operating funds. An additional
$10,000+/- in pass-through funds for membership services such as
music, performance folders and attire are reimbursed by the members.
(Of note, VOICES also serves the Carolina International Chorale during
years when it travels. This budget-neutral activity will again be
undertaken in summer 2020 for a planned concert tour to Central
Europe.)
Each season's operating budget is directly influenced by the musical
programs which translate to costs for venues, orchestra, rental of large
instruments such as tympani, and the need for vocal soloists, an
organist or other solo instrumentalist. A limited number of venues can
support the staging requirements of our large symphonic chorus with an
orchestra. Historically VOICES has used Hill Hall on the UNC-Chapel Hill
campus for these concerts and area churches for CANTARI's
performances (University United Methodist, Chapel of the Cross, and
Holy Trinity Lutheran). We are deeply grateful to the Directors of Music at
these local churches who make our work more financially feasible.
This Grass Roots Grant from OCAC will assist VOICES in achieving and
maintaining a stable financial position that will permit us to perform in the
settings that provide the most enjoyment for both our members and
Orange County audiences.
